On June 3, Professor David Cassels Johnson from the College of Education at the University of lowa was invited to give a lecture to all teachers and students of the College of International Languages and Cultures themed Epistemology, Paradigms, and Research Methods in Language Policy and Planning Studies. Dong Guijun, deputy dean of the college presided this lecture.
With his profound expertise in language policy and planning, Professor Johnson systematically elaborated on different research paradigms in the field. He first explored the theoretical foundations of the discipline from a philosophical perspective, analyzed traditional definitions of language policy, and innovatively proposed a new conceptual framework. Afterwards, he examined the role of language policy in social transformation and economic development, illustrating transformative paradigms in policy design and implementation through global case studies, while emphasizing its impact on social equity and sustainable development.
During the lecture, Professor Johnson demonstrated emerging trends in language policy and planning research by citing extensive literature. In the Q&A session, faculty and students actively engaged with questions on topics such as paradigmatic disparities in scholarly writing between CSSCI(Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index) and SSCI(Social Sciences Citation Index), governance system for internet slang, and power dynamics in language policy implementation. Professor Johnson provided practical strategies for translating theoretical frameworks into feasible solutions based on his research experience.
This lecture offered cutting-edge academic insights to our teachers and students, particularly in the interdisciplinary study of language policy and social development. It holds significant value for enhancing our research innovation capacity and disciplinary advancement.
