Professor Wang Ning delivered a lecture titled“Translation as an Intercultural Interpretation” on the morning of Sept. 6th. Wang is Dean of Institute of Arts and Humanities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, a member of the Academic Committee of Tsinghua University, Chang Jiang Distinguished Professor of Foreign Language and Literature, and Director of Center for Comparative Literature and Cultural Research. His lecture was chaired by Professor Cai Bin, Dean of this college.
During the two-hour session, Prof. Wang started by introducing the globalization drive as well as the cultural trend. Next, he expounded the importance of translation in terms of its functions in culture, recreation of literary translation and translation as an intercultural interpretation. He also quoted some successful translation cases from literary and theoretic works to illustrate that it is possible for translation to play an irreplaceable role in our endeavor to promote Chinese literature internationally.
At the end of his speech, Prof. Wang interacted with the audience members by answering their questions about translation prospects. Teaching faculty and many students of the college were attracted to the inspiring lecture, from which they have a deeper understanding of translation as an intercultural interpretation.
