Energetic volunteers constituted a unique sight when the final round of 2017 FIVB World Grand Prix was taking place in Nanjing from Aug. 2nd to 6th. Thirty-five of them were students from this college, volunteering their time and language talent in fields such as Team Management, Technical Translation, VIP Service, Press Center, TV Broadcasting, Ticket Affairs and Logistic Service. All the student volunteers from this college devoted themselves to their work positively with professional services.

Demonstrating Professional Competence

There were six world-class teams competing in the final. They were from China, America, Brazil, Holland, Italy and Serbia. Jobs like team manager, technical translator and VIP service required students from this college to provide one-to-one services around the clock. What’s more, they were asked to serve team members, technical officials and VIPs from the moment they arrived in Nanjing. To do a better job, student volunteers made active preparations to get the whole picture of volleyball and sports by self-study and group discussions. During the final, they could not only assist foreign personnel in communicating well with Chinese staffs, but also help foreign technicians install electronic scoring system and eagle eye.

Showing Comprehensive Quality

As an annual event of FIVB, the exciting final was live broadcast worldwide by a press center and a telecast department which were also responsible for collecting, editing stories and news report, organizing press conference and broadcasting. News coverage is usually demanding and involves time limit. While others were taking a rest, student volunteers at the press center and TV broadcast were fully occupied in their work, helping organize every press conference before or after the game, taking foreign media to conduct interviews, and marking exact English notes on each photo uploaded to FIVB website. Being the last to get off work every day, they had no complaints. Instead, they considered their work a great challenge and experience and they were always ready to work, highly praised for their responsible and strict spirits by the organizing committee and participants of the game.

Expressing Youthful Energy

The games turned out to be very exciting, with cheers now and then inside the venue. But volunteers from this college were so bent on their work, having no time to take a glance at what was going on in the sportsground. Some of them were keeping order, checking tickets and guaranteeing supplies; others were practicing standard actions of lifting flag over and over again so as to successfully accomplish march-in as flag-bearers; and more were at airports, train stations and hotels, receiving and sending off guests or helping foreign visitors adapt to the environment as quickly as possible so that they would have no worries and could participate in the game whole-heartedly.

During the five days, students from this college exemplified the volunteer spirit of “Devotion, Friendship, Mutual Help and Progress” through what they did. In the future this college is to insist on “Practice-based Education”, incorporating more social resources according to major characteristics and setting up an all-round educational system. (Wang Lu)
