An international symposium on “Contemporary Literature as Cultural Production and Its Research Paradigms” was successfully held in HHU Wentian Hall between Dec 17th and 18th, 2016. Mr. Guo Jichao, Vice Secretary of the CPC Committee of HHU, extended his warmest congratulations and earnest welcome to all the participants and guests. Professor Cai Bin, Dean of this college chaired the opening ceremony. Professor Yang Jincai, Dean of School of Foreign Studies, Nanjing University and chief editor of Contemporary Foreign Literature, made opening remarks. After him, more than ten renowned scholars at home and abroad delivered wonderful speeches centered around the topic of “Contemporary Literature as Cultural Production and Its Research Paradigms”. They were Prof. George Hutchinson from Cornell University, Prof. Marshall W. Alcorn Jr. From George Washington University, Prof. Mark S. Morrisson from Pennsylvania State University, Prof. Simon C. Estok from Sungkyunkwan University, Prof. Nan Ma from Bellevue College, Prof. Chen Shidan from Renmin University of China, Prof. Zeng Yanyu from Hunan University of Science and Technology, and Prof. Zhu Zhenwu from Shanghai Normal University. Their speeches were thought-provoking, offering an academic feast for hungry minds.
A panel discussion was then conducted. Based on a good understanding of speeches made by the above professors, participants aired their opinions about topics such as “Globalization and Regional Culture”, “Cultural Production of Literature”, “Important Writers and Theorists of Contemporary Literature”, “Cultural and National Identity of Postmodernism”, etc. Comments from the experts were quite inspiring.
The symposium was sponsored by the Editorial Office of Contemporary Foreign Literature, hosted by this college together with Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press and Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press. Nearly 160 participants participated in the event.
