On December 22, 2014, famous pragmatic researcher, Professor He Ziran was invited to our college and made a brilliant academic report entitled by "Discussion on social and public pragmatic issues". Hosted by Duhui, the report was held in the Conference Center of Jiangning Campus. Present at this academic report were Doctoral supervisor, Professor Chen Xinren from School of Foreign Studies of Nanjing University, Vice President of our college Professor Caibin (presided over work), Vice President, Professor Duhui , Vice President, Professor Yang Ronghua and hundreds of teachers and students of our college.
Professor He Ziran, in the report, focused on pragmatic issues involved in daily communication. He said that people in their daily social interactions often change their identities or roles of conversations based on subjects, contents and discourses with different pragmatic ways to safeguard their own interests, to promote mutual understanding or to achieve mutual communication. For this reason, people tend to talk based on different people, reactions and environments. In the process of changing roles, identity and discourses in conversations, people try to achieve the aim of communication. In addition to discussing how to adjust subjects according to this principle, Professor He Ziran also discussed specifically on pragmatic status dislocation caused by fraud and unsuitable public discourses and reviewed the code mixing phenomenon impacts on social and public discourses, and he stated his own views from the perspective of language policy and language planning accordingly.
In interactive sessions, Professor He Ziran exchanged ideas with teachers and students about pragmatic issues encountered in daily life. Professor Chen Xinren talked about the choices of pragmatic skills in different environments with teachers and students. This report promoted participants’ reflections on language usage and language policies and broadened their horizon as well.
At the end of the report, Professor Caibin, Associate Director of the College administrative work, on behalf of the college, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Professor He's visit. He said that this report allowed us to enjoy the unique charm of pragmatics and benefited us a lot. He also hoped that more experts and scholars of pragmatics would pay a visit to our college.
